There may be many reasons for container shipping delays but port congestion is one, resulting in ships waiting for a berth at teh relevant wharf.

MV 'Hansa Bitburg' departed the Port of Melbourne at 1657 hours on Tuesday 24 August, bound for Auckland. As at 1227 AEST on Friday 27, it was in Bass Strait, but only south of Inverloch, Victoria. Not much progress in almost three days, and now travelling at a slow 11.7 knots.

This is a micro example of the difficulties facing PTL even when it largely exports only across the Tasman Sea to Kiwiland.

NZ has already had repeated problems at its busiest port, Tauranga, after port employees spent time on board ships whose seafarers had COVID-19.
