The options, if holding less than 5,000, don't evaporate. They just have to be exercised in one go, ie you cannot exercise half and hold onto half.
If you hold sufficient shares to take up say 6,000 new entitlement shares with 6,000 attached options then if looking to exercise the options you can exercise them all or if you want to hold onto some then you can exercise a minimum of 5,000.
