I think that all things nuclear and US national security related are going to get fast-tracked in the USA in the near future. Just in the past three years, China has gone from being technologically unquestionably second-rate in comparison to the USA to being a power that could very realistically defeat the USA militarily under certain scenarios.
The US is painfully aware of this, and they aren't going to allow themselves to be eclipsed so easily.
