Companies often start with broad claims that can be rejected. They are then narrowed, refined and resubmitted. This is apparently a common patent strategy which would be handled by their US patent attorney.
A pending patent provides protection from competitors in the jurisdiction it was submitted.
In other words, its a work in progress and its pretty normal stuff.
