@1956 they did what they had to do. The folks paying 85% of the bill said thats it, we've earned our 85%. Stop.
I agree with you that someone needs to go through the hard rock geology with a fine tooth comb - and try to reconstruct the igneous sequence to see how far into the ophiolite we are, and whether there are any thrust repetitions and most importantly, try to reconstruct the igneous successions/look for patterns. That is a heap of work for someone to unravel 2,000m of cuttings to look at and test.

Meanwhile,@mercury_rising has a point - 3D seismic may help, but it may also be hampered by loads of interference from broken ground. And it will take a while.

My view is they are better off spending the money to do a detailed study of the 2,000m of ophiolite cuttings (trace element ratios, isotope ratios, etc) to try and establish a pattern in this igneous succession of rocks - this will go a longer way to unravelling the mystery and would be comparatively less expensive and readily achieved than 3D seismic. Sadly, most geos pigeon hole themselves into soft rock and hard rock and never the twain do meet. Need to meet here.
