My compromise would be that vertically integrated advisers be called 'agents' as it used to be for aligned life insurance salesman back in the day.
Then there isn't this selling under the guise of 'advice', it was always a product related transaction and consumers can treat it accordingly. You know a car salesman is going to try to sell you a car, same principal.
