Gas readings are an indication of the presence of hydrocarbons in the reservoir and generally speaking, the higher the better (though not always), but higher gas doesn't mean you have a gas discovery as opposed to oil.

What is more important in terms of gas vs oil is the wetness ratio of the gas, which is the ratio of heavy gas hydrocarbons (propane and butane) to methane.

In this case, the 80% gas probably indicates a large volume of HCs coming into the wellbore from the fractures - almost a kick. If the chromatograph of the gas detector shows high propane and butane, you can infer there is oil coming in too. As you would already know from the oil slick forming on top of the mud tank. :)
