Another good post mate. I've never had that issue with my accountant, though I have no doubt that scenario exists with traders. I generally buy periodically and then sell in one big hit (though sometimes an iceberg order, but all the sells usually land on the same time) and then it's pretty obvious to calculate that xxx amount of shares were held for a year and xxx amount were not. My accountant fills that all in and no issues.
I hear traders have some weird rules like wash sales and more, but since I don't trade like that it's never really applied to me. I buy over the course of several years, but never sell. When they're all sold, it's not hard to see what was bought on what date and split the parcels up accordingly, since it's not a confusing mess of in and out.
