The link above describes it. The private owners virtually nominate the worth of the company but only release enoUgh shares to make sure they are tightly held but still get into the index. Getting into the index forces the index fund managers to buy the shares to get into the correct weighting. THEN the substantial holders sell out. Happened with Chemist Warehouse………. Have a listen……
