Looking at it from the perspective of an electrical circuit a series arrangement means one absorber followed by the next, in a direct line. All the input gas must enter the first absorber, some H2S and other contaminants will be absorbed. The gas will exit the first absorber and enter the second where more H2S and other contaminants are absorbed. A parallel arrangement will have two branches, each with only one absorber. So the input gas will split into two paths, enter the absorber and then exit and then won’t pass through a second absorber. The two branches will join up again and onto the next phase of the process.
