I am yet to see a single met announcement on the ASX use pH 4 with hydrochloric. ANSTO and ALS use sulphuric acid when they do pH 4 leach tests.
The hydrochloric tests usually are 25 g/L (pH 0) or 50 g/L (pH negative 0.3). Problem with hydrochloric is it costs 4x sulphuric and on top of that fills the leach circuit with chlorides so all the equipment now needs to be made out of exotic metals due to corrosion, so CAPEX blows out.
If this leaches at pH 4, they won't say the acid type because it's irrelevant, exactly as you say. E.g. MEI don't note acid type anywhere in their announcements.
I am not super bullish on VTM these days, hold a small parcel from way back that's still in the green and happy to ride out. Much better leachable rare earth projects have come to the light with tested and proven metallurgy since I bought VTM early last year..
