yep. now they use blockchain to issue these certificates and called them digital tokens/coins.. but the only innovation is that the tech and the main principal is same. people don't not have to carry 500 ounces of gold on a plane/train/car/ship... as it's lot easier to protect small usb stick if they wish to use cold storage or they can simply use their web account at the destination to prove they own X amount of gold and claim it.
The safety mechanism increased but the principal is same.
