We have Niton XRF handhelds at work, however they're not used for ore analysis. From memory chatting with the sales guy we purchased them from, he said you can set up a tray and grind the sample down, then you go over it in a grid pattern taking readings and average it out. Not super accurate but would give you a good ballpark idea. Haven't seen it done though..
