All or virtually all shorting was banned in 2008 in the gfc but the market makers kicked up a stink and had the rules changed . There are and have been many twists since that time and many I'm guessing don't play by the rules either . Have a look at the majors shareholders of the asx .

Worth considering how the yanks do it as well as that is plain nasty .
