Lake Goongarrie reports an average of 264.9mm / 11 inches annualized rainfall. Almost identical to rainfall over all of the open pit mines around Kalgoorlie. They all seem to do fine.
You're forgetting that Lake Goongarrie is, well, a lake, a catchment, i.e, the lowest point in the surrounding area by far, so it will be affected by rainfall far more than other mines.
