The mathematics are simple If a company has an MC of say $100M , earns 10% of that and pays a 10% dividend it remains at MC $100M. Now in general terms management salary and obnuses reflect the MC. If the company pays no dividends but re invests our money, then in round figures they can claim an extra 10% per year in salaries and bonuses plus compound interest etc. . And we just adopt the position and accept it. Well I don't but it seems that most do.
