Pyroclastic kimberlite (PK) will be the words to watch during the upcoming drilling programme.
Based on results so far, Resedimented Volcaniclastic Kimberlite (RVK) contains lower diamond grades and is of less interest. Therefore the PK is key.
Angolan kimberlites are well preserved an take on a "champagne glass" profile.
Low priority RVK is thickest at the centre of the crater and thins out towards the edge.
High priority PK sits beneath the RVK and becomes more exposed at the edge of the crater.
This is why LOM are so keen on finding the edge of the kimberlite before taking bulk samples.
Post eruption, you will also find PK as part of the tuff ring and crater boundary walls.
In my opinion the southern side of the ring has been eroded and washed a short distace by limited fluvial action towards the block 8 area. It is possible that this is the source of the large specials which show little sign of transport and abrasion.
The L259 maps shows RVK (green circles) located in the north area. The sedimented SRVK (yellow circles) are located further south. This tells us the water flow is from north to south. The swampy conditions, signs of land slippage, lack of vegetation and lacustrine sediments also suggest this area was once a small lake. Any eroded and exposed PK would have been covered by sediments.
As tributaries flow into this lake from L13 and L15, this becomes a confluence target, hence the "big puddle of diamonds" on block 8. Note that no PK was reported which is why I pointed to the theory that the southern section of the tuff ring was washed away to become part of the puddle.
So where is the source of the big jagged edged diamonds?
Well, the Pyroclastic kimberlite (PK) component of L259 is a prime suspect and that is what this coy will soon be bulk sampling. Very exciting, can't wait for the results.
