just my own thoughts but with lake wanting to expand past the original scope of works the lilac technology may not be able up to lakes need long term and lake is just looking for any other new options in the market from when they initially completed their first assessments, testing the waters so to speak . I did see Lilac a while ago in an interview and they stated that getting the beads (used in the extraction process for the lithium) to last was a challenge. The system may work very well and produce the lithium which it has already but not in the volumes that lake is looking for with the expanding market.
This why you build a pilot plant to demonstrate commercial viability and to highlight any process errors before committing large amounts of capex to a full size plant
