Hydrogen “hype” and a bunch of packaged bad engineering got successfully sold to some clueless politician types, and they talked a lot about it. They are wrong.
There are so so many reasons that Hydrogen is BAD for the purpose proposed. Hydrogen is JUST barely sensible at a fixed site that makes excess power, as you can use the extra power to split water and save the H2 in tanks for “baseload” or “storage”.
Reasons H2 is stupid to use in mass systems:
1. H2 is an energy carrier, not a fuel, and is very low energy density and hard to contain, so if you are going to make an energy carrier for a car, Hydrogen (H2) is a pretty stupid one, as tanks have to be huge for limited miles.
2. H2 leaks thru almost everything. can’t use current natural gas lines.
3. H2 burns very hot, is explosive in low amounts, and see 2.
4. H2 does not scale well.
What should we use as an energy carrier? Either a Liquid fuel (stable at operating conditions) OR natural gas!
