I'll flesh this out a bit, as general comments. They're not specific to Lake.
As a general rule, JVs are good to get $$$ eg:

preferably cash ...

but could be asset swaps including shares in another entity, which could be a downstream entity such as a processing facility;

typically has a component of money spent in the ground;

a combination of the above, and more.

The possibilities are almost infinite, depending on what the incoming party can offer, in addition to cash. e.g. a JV might also give other benefits like:

new technical input e.g. if the farmin party is an SQM etc a la Kidman;

marketing opportunities, to process or sell product easier – e.g. Pilbara – Great Wall, Posco.

However, a JV is not all one-way traffic e.g.:

there' s lower reward going forward, because you've sold some of the interest;

you have less control over decision making, as there's some else who has to agree to future actions etc. (like being single -v- being married etc)

the JV might reduce (or sometimes increase) the possibility of a take-over bid from a 3^rd party in future. (others may think you're completely out of the market...)

In short, swings and roundabouts, depending on what the incoming party brings to the table, and how attractive the deal is.

I have no doubt that the Lake directors are across the pro's and con's and will weigh up all the right things when the time comes. They are astute enough to know not to narrow down options or give up flexibility with early public pronouncements. Instead, I'm sure they'll keep options open for all kinds of juicy deals until someone makes an offer that's too good to refuse!
