Shikibo, Maskmakers Gain After Japan Confirms First Flu Death

Aug. 17 (Bloomberg) -- Shikibo Ltd., Daiwabo Holdings Co. and other makers of materials used in medical masks gained in Tokyo trading after Japan confirmed its first death from swine flu.
Osaka-based Shikibo surged 11 percent to 203 yen as of 9:38 a.m. on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, set for the highest close since April 30. It was the biggest gainer on the Topix index, which fell as much as 1.6 percent.
A man, aged in his 50s on the southern island of Okinawa, died on Aug. 15 after contracting the virus, according to a statement from the Okinawa swine flu task force.
Daiwabo climbed as much as 9 percent to 424 yen. Fujibo Holdings Inc. soared up to 11 percent to 166 yen, while Unitika Ltd. gained as much as 5.6 percent to 94 yen.
Eiken Chemical Co., a clinical reagent maker, jumped as much as 8.4 percent to 1,045 yen. Daiichi Sankyo Co., which is developing a flu drug, gained as much as 3.5 percent.
Chugai Pharmaceutical Co., the Japanese seller of the influenza drug Tamiflu, increased up to 2.1 percent.
