I worked at the Hunter Resources Mertondale mine back in 1986 and stories told to me were that large nuggets have been found in that area for over 100 years.
After heavy rains (which would expose them) they could be bought in the Whitehouse pub in Leonora from the local aboriginals who excelled at spotting them by eye.
