My first step to crunching the data in this announcement involved putting the collars into Google Earth.

One thing lead to another and I noticed that the drilling in the AL01 area was visible. The main NS access track in this area seems well formed so I followed it north to Winu, and south to Minyari and Telfer as it wiggled through the dunes. The red wiggle below may not be the only route but gives a fair idea of what distance such a track needs to cover when sand dunes need to be avoided. The southern portion does in fact contain some legacy sand dune crossings (interpreted anyway).

Summary



The direct routes show the shortest straight line would be a touch over 120 Kms of new road or 75K ms of new to the existing PH-Telfer road.

Upgrading the existing track (some 250 Kms) and cutting across some dunes to "straighten" out the route (magenta) would give some 150 Kms. No easy way and a lot of logistics etc etc required. Just part of a thought experiment.
