The day traders see the announcement and create a buying frenzy leading to the sp spiking sharply. They then sell on mass (usually mid afternoon) hoping for a quick profit leading to the price drifting back.
Whether they made money will depend on the price they bought. Many become disgruntled because they paid too much and got caught.
