The price/kilowatt hour is a bit misleading. When we read about the magical USD or €100 per kwh, it refers to the cost price of the battery cells and not the final battery pack price.
From the 14/09/2022 announcement:
These SAS battery modules are expected to sell for between EUR 7,000-9,000 per module, or EUR 700- 900 per KWh, at final pack costs.
IKTS has estimated that the total cost of production for CERENERGY® batteries will be 40%-50% cheaper than lithium-ion batteries.
(Module here meant the original 10kwh unit).
Cost reductions will come from cell chemistry, cell manufacture and battery pack manufacture.
Breaking out the actual cell cost price per kilowatt hour is being determined as part of the DFS but we may never be told this even when the DFS is completed.
The EUR 700-900 per KWh, at final pack costs look too high to me. Tesla Megapacks are pushing below USD500/kwh (pack basis) depending on the volume purchased.
However as we know, the Cerenergy batteries have a >15 year lifetime, 6 hour charge/discharge cycles, higher safety and a far wider operating temperature range. All these attributes have a $ value.
I recently asked a related question and the response I received was:
When the cells are assembled with BMS, heat management etc, they could cost US$500-900 per KWh. We have yet to finalise our costs hence the DFS.
Funny how the bottom range number has dropped from 700 to 500 (Euro currently nearing parity with USD)
