Better late than never.
Maybe they didnt feel they needed one until now and that it wasn't worth spending big $$ while negotiations were in their infancy? Nobody knows the discussions behind closes doors we can only speculate.
With the tech going into the prototype perhaps it is the perfect time to bring an expert in who wouldn't be cheap.
