You don't give back half in tax.
Capital gains tax (as far as I'm aware) works like this:
Say your capital gain is $200,000.
It is immediately discounted by 50%.
That leaves $100,000 and that is taxed at your current marginal tax rate, say 30%.
That means your tax bill is $30,000, which ain't 50% of $200,000.
I'm not an accountant, so double check with yours.
