What was it? Diamond? Gold? Platinum? Something that is measured in karats and not tonnes perhaps? And a quick google shows it was a copper mine that was essentially a mountain. So the original peak was its height pre flattening and digging out the core below ground level. Its a one off at best. And copper is many more times valuable than Lithium tonne for tonne.
The depth is relevant depending on the resource and economics of strip ratio, local labour costs, resource quality, resource purity and ease of concentration , etc. It is not irrelevant as you make out.
