Its a neutral thing.
Here's an example: A company has 10,000 shares of stock each worth $1. They announce a 5:1 reverse stock split. Now, they have 2,000 shares outstanding each worth $5.
If an investor owned 1000 shares, he now owns 200 worth exactly the same amount.
So nothing happens to investors, the number of shares and the price just changes.
