A decision has been made this week to cancel the American Burn Association Annual Meeting which was to have been held in Orlando, Florida, next week.
PolyNovo was one of six, third-level sponsors for the event. Notably, Avita and Integra were the two top-level sponsors.
All abstracts to have been presented at the meeting have been published in a supplement to the March 2020 edition of the
Journal of Burn Care and Research. It looks to me as if there might be three abstracts which relate to BTM.
Of particular interest to me was Abstract 796 -
Use of a Synthetic Matrix Instead of Allograft for Temporizing a Major Burn, which was authored by doctors from the Connecticut Burn Centre. The synthetic dermal matrix used for temporizing the burns is not identified.
Two males, both in their 30s, had sustained 55% TBSA burns, with their lower extremities suffering deep partial- and full-thickness burns. The left leg of each patient was treated with the institution’s standard of care – use of cadaveric skin allograft, followed by split skin graft. The right legs were treated instead using a “synthetic dermal matrix”, as well as allograft in a small area, as needed.
Patient 1- Time from matrix application to delamination and STSG was 31 days.
- 4446cm2 of synthetic dermal matrix applied
- If standard treatment had been used, roughly 20 units of allograft every week for 5 weeks (100 units total) would have been required. One unit (package) of allograft = 232cm2.
Patient 2- Time from matrix application to delamination and STSG was 26 days.
- 2268cm2 of synthetic dermal matrix applied
- If standard treatment had been used, roughly 10 units of allograft every week for 4 weeks (40 units in total) would have required.
It was noted that use of the matrix resulted in a substantial cost savings compared with use of allograft and this did not include the additional savings in operating room costs. The abstract concludes
Application of a synthetic dermal matrix to a well-excised burn wound can allow for decreased use of allograft in large burns, where allograft is traditionally applied and exchanged as a temporizing measure. This can result in a significant decrease in product use, the operative time spent exchanging these allografts, and the patient blood loss that inevitably accompanies allograft exchange.*http://ameriburn.org/education/annual-meeting/
