Devil’s Mountain appears to be closely linked to the Gympie Goldfield, potentially even forming an extension of it. Gympie has long been considered one of Queensland’s most significant goldfields, and it could very well be the richest in the state—though I’m open to evidence that might challenge that claim.
I have read that when BHP reopened mining operations in Gympie during the 1980s, their internal estimates placed the total gold endowment of the area at around 13 million ounces.
This figure is particularly notable given BHP’s general approach to resource development—they traditionally focused on large-scale, world-class deposits, rarely considering anything below 10 million ounces. Such an estimate suggests that Gympie was not only historically productive but potentially still held substantial untapped resources at the time.Given its long history of gold production, stretching back to the late 19th century, and its significance in Queensland’s mining sector, it’s likely that Gympie remains one of the most prolific goldfields in the state.
If Devil’s Mountain is indeed geologically connected to Gympie, it could further reinforce the area's status as a major gold-producing region.
