Use of patents and IP will bring them money same as franchise through agreements. It doesn't matter if its from OEM, joint ventures, private investments etc. It will likely be a mixture not limited by one way.
Brick, parts, manufacturing, training, delivery of product contracts all add up. You can find examples online of other R&D companies.
FBR dont need to fund machines, clients will if machine has proven itself as a fruitful source of profit under contract conditions.
WaaS is simply the service downstream from the clients which can be provided through fbr or partners. Id like to see more partners than fbr do this for a bigger reach focusing on profit from quantity.
I would definitely like fbr to stay focused on R&D, I think dst has a lot of potential applications like the ewp example I provided which is much simpler. We just need the hx to get its wings first and if successful fbr will grow significantly when the coffers are full.
