I have a lot of sensors, lights and automations here at home. Most turn on lights as I open a door or enter a room and because they are all set in Home Assistant and work locally....not cloud based....they are instant and work well. But its not a consumer level product at all and requires some programming knowledge. Everything else is voice controlled via Alexa. The house is almost fully automated.
The other part is that you need to have flexibility in options as to when the lights come on. There is little value in having lights come on during the day if you enter a room. The same can be said of having lights come on in the middle of the night if the cat walks around the house. This has happened to me in my early attempts.....I fixed it of course by creating rules around times the light are allowed to be triggered....again it took programming and some hits and misses.
Not many manufacturers are going to attempt that as an out of the box solution I'm afraid. I would like to see more automation features in the LifX app....that is a huge selling point right there.
The nice thing is that there is now a Smart Home industry which has developed out of the interest in smart devices. I know of one electrician who specialises in it now and kits out new houses with smart devices and provides automation solutions and its taking over his business.
