You have already noticed that the shipping containers have plenty of space above the product when they've been filled to maximum weight. Expanding the graphite would not necessarily change the number of containers needed.
That said, perhaps the advantage of expandable graphite rather than expanded graphite is that it doesn't occupy that additional volume until it is needed to be.
