Where are you getting this information that Cosmos was effectively accidental? A paper on the discovery, of whom one of the authors is Tony Rovira, says that "it was discovered in mid-1997 using a combination of geological, geochemical and geophysical exploration techniques during routine evaluation of a prospective ultramafic belt". All credit to the discovers but they're not doing anything out of the ordinary and nothing in that quote says it was part of an "error" as you put it.
