If they had no further use for the well, they would P&A it now. It would be much more cost and time effective to do that now rather than return later if, as you say, it has no further use.
It may not be able to turn water into gas, but maybe it can be used as a water injector or even a future geothermal well.
I am just spit-balling here, but I'm sure their logic is sound, as it is a million-dollar decision.
Sorry about the well for all the holders, but that is the risk we all take. Luckily the bid will shield most from the downside risk.
