It's still blatant cronyism. There was absolutely nothing independent about this appointment.
There's a reason why the ASX and all other markets stipulate an "independent" process for composing a board of a public company. That's designed to ensure the success and longevity of a company.
A company that has a board of independent directors who can bring different opinions and perspectives has a much better chance of being successful than a company whose board members all march to the same drummer.
