Because diamonds, even at economic grades are so rare in kimberlite or lamporite ore its virtually impossible to see any diamonds in normal drill core or ever see any in broken ore stockpiles. I knew that and still curiously examined many tonnes of ore before conceding it was a waste of time. It takes large diameter drill bit arrays (about 1 metre in total diameter) drilled well into the pipe and many tonnes of cuttings treated through a diamond recovery plant before any diamonds show up. Standard diamond cores show indicator minerals like pyrope garnets etc but no diamonds. Core geochemistry and several indicators provide useful and definitive information but only tens of tonnes of bulk sampling will prove it up. That is still to happen and when it does it will be very successful.
