the problem is one washer can appear and scare off the new punters; a new punter can think:... oh, I made a mistake investing $5k in this company... look at the big volume now 5% below my buy, I will sell my $5k for a 5% loss, lucky I can get out...

alas, the washer picks them up; I dont like washers

or maybe $5k buyer is a mini day trader and will sell for a 5% profit in a few days - even ignoring washers... of course that is A-OK

or maybe the $5k buyer is a new long term holder... 'welcome to the club' we say, 'ignore the washers'
