Phenylketonuria (PKU) is widely diagnosed by tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) as part of the newborn screening test. The test can be done in mass scale and it can produce results in 1 to 2 minutes.
Phenylketonuria can be treated but cannot be cured. It can be prevented pre-pregnancy with the mother following a low-phenylalanine diet.
'MS/MS probably can be added to existing newborn screening systems for an incremental cost on the order of $10 per sample.'
