If the company thinks it's shares are presently below their intrinsic value and/or there is optimism internally about future prospects... then free cash can be used today to buy-back 'cheap' shares. This reduces the supply of shares which therefore gives the remaining shareholders a greater stake in future rewards that are expected to follow.
