At Winston Lake, following an initial re-evaluation of the ore reserves and the mine plan,
operations were suspended on December 4, 1998. During the subsequent two months, a
recalculation of the resource and an evaluation of alternative mining methods at Winston Lake
were completed based on data from a test mining program and results of additional underground
diamond drilling. These studies concluded that the resource is not economic to mine without a
substantial and sustained increase in metal prices. As a result, Inmet decided to permanently
close the operation. In 1999, Inmet will proceed with closure activities. A $36.3 million write
down, representing Inmet’s carrying value of Winston Lake, was recorded in the fourth quarter

from the bottom of page 3 the inmet quarterly 1999.
