Antilles Gold has defined two major copper-gold drill targets at its El Pilar project in Cuba after successfully completing ground magnetics and induced polarisation (IP) surveys across 50 per cent of the site.

The company says its El Pilar and Gaspar porphyry targets, which are adjacent to previous shallow drilling of the greater El Pilar copper-gold system, have been interpreted as having “significant dimensions”.

The El Pilar project covers 1700 hectares and is one of three exploration concessions held by Antilles in an agreement with the Cuban government-owned, GeoMinera SA.

The company says locations will soon be established for its first five drillholes and will be planned to a vertical depth of 600m for both the El Pilar and Gaspar targets once 3D block models have been completed for the two prospects.

According to the recent IP survey, one of the intrusions continues to the limit of the survey at more than 800m in depth. The Gaspar zone is located immediately to the east of El Pilar and is associated with a large area of surficial hydrothermal alteration and gold mineralisation from recent rock-chip sampling.

A recent drill hole cored into the outer margins of the deposit returned a staggering 134m grading at 1.23 per cent copper, with an internal 18.5m core running at 5.52 per cent copper.Gaspar is an additional target for copper-gold mineralisation that remains largely undrilled.

Both targets are expected to have significant vertical extensions which should become evident in 3D block models which are currently being prepared.

El Pilar caught Antilles’ eye through exploration results from the 1990s when Canadian company SGS Resources undertook mapping, soil sampling and aeromagnetic survey in 22 trenches and 24,000m of shallow drilling of the overlying gold-copper oxide zone.

Recently released assays from drilling at the El Pilar oxide zone highlighted 134.5m grading 1.13 per cent copper from 49.85m, including 18.5m at 4.85 per cent copper. It was in addition to 30.5m at 0.51 per cent copper from 49.5m, including 14m going 38.31 g/t gold.

Porphyry deposits are the source of much of the world’s gold, copper, silver and molybdenum and while porphyry ore grades are typically low, the tonnage is usually high.

The company has signed a drilling contractor to be mobilised to the site to start a five-hole campaign at the porphyry zone within the next fortnight. A 10,000m drilling program is scheduled this month for the oxide zone in order to establish JORC resources and to advance a scoping study for an open-pit mine to produce gold and copper concentrates.
