I always Thought Americans were the worse. I am a yank. I think it is a case of not wanting to understand locale customs. Customs are different That does not make anybody right or wrong. If you do not go to trouble of understanding the customs then trouble will follow. I would never bow to any American in US. I would find it offensive to us both. I worked In Japan a lot. I would always bow when appropriate. Maybe not as deeply as many of them do but I always tried. I never Learned the language. But I learned enough to great and say goodby people and read most menus. Always a few smiles at my pronunciation. I could laugh with them when I was realy bad. After hours I always tried to have casual clothes that fit in at least a little. Not saying I had special outfits just made sure I did not where any thing that clashed. In Bermuda you always have shorts. Other countries never. Many countries you should never wear shorts to a business meeting. In Bermuda shorts tie and jacket is normal. Do not think i could wear a kilt in Scotland especially with nothing under it.
I m not saying you should look or behave like people you are visiting. Just enough to show you respect them, and are OK with the differences.
