There is competing technology but the network (Iridium) is key. I liken it to using an iPhone 6 with Vodafone in an area where Vodafone coverage is terrible vs using an iPhone 4 on Telstra with the best network coverage by a long way. At the end of the day, and especially in emergency/remote situations, network coverage is key and Globalstar doesn't compete with Iridium (yet) in that regard.
