Hi phw, basically it looks like hydrogen is going to be produced by electrolysis (whether that will be powered by solar or carbon we will see) whichever, this hydrolysis needs a platinum catalyst to convert protons to hydrogen gas (and either iridium or ruthenium on the other side of the membrane to catalyze oxygen evolution).
these catalysts get poisoned over time so they need replacing, in a serious hydrogen economy, Pt/Pd/Ir supply will be a critical issue, imo
