The idea is to clean all the tiny shareholders like me whose collapsed value is not worth selling, Takes a lot of costly admin expense (but didn't really take much company money to achieve in the scheme of things). I guess it also makes sense to buy back when significantly below cash backing. It improves what's left for the remaining holders.
