    I think there is an error in your logic re 90%.

    If you take a 75 micron flake and shave it down to 10-15 microns you will never achieve 60% recovery rates. The 75 micron flake is going to need to be cut/broken several times and then shaped if you have 50-60% recovery rates. While the size is smaller, the number of items is larger.

    Scaling up to give an easier to think through example, if you start with a block of cheese and cut it into 1cm cubes, you will have a lot more cubes but each cube is small. At this point you haven't lost much material at all. These small cheese blocks then have the edges cut off to make them round and this is where all the fines come from. The original block might have been 5cm or 10cm wide but you haven't reduced the volume by 90% by creating 1cm balls because you have a lot more of them than the one block you started with.
