One of my mates was widely regarded by his colleagues as the best geologist at BHP in the 1980s. He made two major discoveries. His secret was spending nearly all his time in the field and building a multi-decade mental picture of the area he was exploring. He didn't write papers and didn't switch between sub-disciplines. He certainly didn't spend most of his time staring at a screen or going on wild goose chases.
