Its certainly possible but would require significant design work. - There was a presentation a few years back that showed an example of a laptop with narrow strips on either edge of the screen (eg 3mm x 50mm)

However, one of the core principles of AKP's model is for a modular, scalable design - Ie. Technology suppliers can use 1, 2, 80, or more standard (10x10mm) chips in any configuration they choose, and use the provided software to 'tune' the digital signal processing for that configuration. For example, a television manufacturer may choose to use a row of 4 standard chips on either side of the TV screen. A laptop vendor may choose to have 2 standard chips on either side of the screen, another vendor may have one in each corner of the laptop screen.

The manufacturing and commercial elegance of this model is that AKP just churns out millions/ billions of one standard modular chip, and all manufacturers can use that standard chip in their customised configurations. One SKU to produce, massive scale advantages, no maintaining multiple designs and associated production & inventory management etc.

I assume the current design - 10 x 10 mm (32 x 32 pixels) was selected as being the most beneficial modular design, and one that could be incorporated into the widest range of end applications - Laptops, phones, TVs, cars, home stereos etc.
